The First Khutbah

O Servants of Allah, blessed congregation of Eid,

Thing morning , under a radiant sky and amidst a tranquil breeze, we gather with a single, unified declaration: Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar Walillahil hamd. These words of Takbir, Tahlil, and Tahmid are not mere rhythmic sounds; they are a profound admission that our egos are small, our wealth is transient, and our worldly status is humble before His Infinite Majesty.

Honored Guests of Allah, Before the essence of Ramadan fades from our memories, let us realize that the fast was never a mere annual routine of hunger and thirst, nor a simple shift in m

eal times. Ramadan is the "Madrasah of Transformation and Reform" (Madrasatut Taghyir wal Ishlah). It is a comprehensive school of change, arriving to overhaul the very architecture of our lives from the roots to the branches.

This reform anchors itself upon four primary pillars:

1. Personal Reform (Al-Ishlah al-Fardiy)

"Just as a country needs to reform its bureaucracy, a person must reform his inner self. Lacking the cultivation of the soul, individual well-being, domestic bliss, and the very peace and prestige of the nation are nothing more than structures built on shifting sands .

The Law of Change: Any external evolution (economic, social, or political) is an impossibility without internal revolution. This is a foundational truth in Islamic sociology, as Allah says:

"Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves." (QS. Ar-Ra'd: 11)

2. Family Reform (Al-Ishlah al-Usariy)

Ramadan reforms our domestic bonds through congregational prayers, Suhoor, and Iftar, teaching us to restrain our tempers and egos. This is the momentum to strengthen the cords of mercy and restore the family to its role as the "First Madrasah." Allah says:

"O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire." (QS. At-Tahrim: 6)

The Practice of the Salaf: The Messenger of Allah and his companions would awaken their families during the final ten nights, manifesting a reform of spiritual vigilance.

3. Social Reform (Al-Ishlah al-Ijtima'iy)

Through Zakat al-Fitr and charity, fasting dismantles the walls of caste between the affluent and the impoverished. It fosters empathy, transforming social resentment into a bond of love. The Messenger of Allah said regarding the function of Zakat:

"It is taken from the rich among them and returned (distributed) to the poor among them." (HR. Bukhari & Muslim)

The Social Impact of Zakat

  • Economic Equity: Prevents the excessive accumulation of wealth within a single class and promotes a balanced distribution of resources.
  • Poverty Alleviation: Provides essential life capital and sustainable support for the underprivileged to foster self-sufficiency.
  • Purification of Wealth and Soul: Acts as a spiritual cleanser, purging the heart of avarice and arrogance while sanctifying one’s assets.
  • Strengthening Social Cohesion: Dissolves resentment and fosters a sense of brotherhood, ultimately ensuring communal harmony and social stability

The Practice of the Salaf: Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) would never break his fast except in the company of orphans and the needy.

4. National Reform (Al-Ishlah al-Wathaniy)

When individuals, families, and communities are tested in their honesty, a resilient nation is born. Fasting cultivates Amanah (integrity), Muraqabah (the consciousness of being watched by the Divine), and discipline. Allah says:

"And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We would have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth." (QS. Al-A'raf: 96)

The Four Jewels of Human Pursuit

By nature, every human—from the monarch in the palace to the laborer in the market—seeks four things: Profit, Honor, Safety, and Happiness. Yet, we must honestly admit that we often fall into the Paradox of Happiness:

  • The Illusion of Profit: Thinking it is the hoarding of gold, while many are wealthy but live in spiritual poverty.
  • The Illusion of Honor: Thinking it is high rank, while many are at the peak of office but their hearts are wounded and humiliated.
  • The Illusion of Safety: Thinking it is heavy security, while many are guarded yet live in constant anxiety.
  • The Illusion of Happiness: Thinking it is the fulfillment of every desire, while many have everything they want yet live in an endless, exhausting void

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Walillahil Hamd.

The Four Foundations of the Soul

To achieve these jewels, Ramadan builds four sturdy foundations:

  1. Obedience (Ath-Tha’ah): Absolute alignment with Allah’s system.
  2. The Culture of Imsak (Self-Control): The power to restrain oneself from the forbidden.
  3. Diligence in Devotion: Consistency in our connection to the Divine.
  4. Continuity of Good Deeds: Moving from seasonal piety to a sustainable lifestyle.

"There is no goodness, no happiness, and no safety except through obedience, restraining oneself from all prohibitions, worship, and righteous deeds."

True Success: A Heavenly Standard

Let us rectify our definition of "Success" according to the standards of the heavens:

  • True Profit: When every second of life becomes an investment for the Hereafter.
  • True Honor: When your name is beloved by Allah, and He announces it to the inhabitants of the heavens. The Prophet said:

"When Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibril and says: 'Verily, Allah loves so-and-so, so love him.' Then Jibril loves him..." (HR. Bukhari & Muslim)

  • The Ultimate Salvation (Selamat Hakiki)

It is not merely surviving an economic downturn or weathering the storms of worldly crises. True salvation is being shielded from the trials of the grave and delivered from the torments of the Hellfire.

  • The True Happiness

It is the presence of Thuma’ninatul Hayah—a profound tranquility of life—born from an intimate nearness to Allah. It is the exquisite sweetness found in private supplication (munajat) during the stillness of the Dhuha and the sacred depths of the final hours of the night

Imam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

"Indeed, in this world, there is a paradise. Whoever does not enter it will not enter the paradise of the Hereafter." That paradise is the sweetness of faith and the tranquility of being near to Allah.

The Second Khutbah

Honored Guests of Allah, After Ramadan departs, our great mission is to ensure that the foundations we built do not crumble. We must step forward as transformed individuals:

  • With a Righteous Heart: Maintaining Muraqabah (mindfulness of Allah).
  • With Pure Character: Preserving our "Imsak" so our speech and actions remain noble.
  • With a Sharp Intellect: Using the energy of worship to serve humanity.

The Salaf would pray for six months after Ramadan:

"May Allah accept [the deeds] from us and from you."

Life is like a great, lush tree. Ramadan is the water that soaked the roots, and Eid al-Fitr is when the flowers bloom. However, the true beauty of the tree is not in the fleeting flower, but in the fruit that benefits the world throughout the year.

Be the "sweet fruit" for society. Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum.
