1. Opening

Friends who are blessed by Allah, In today’s digital and social media era, we very easily find people skilled at crafting beautiful words. Wise quotes, dazzling rhetoric, and verbal ornaments are scattered everywhere. But have we ever reflected—why do thousands of beautiful words sometimes just pass by our ears without being able to move our hearts? The righteous scholars of the past gave a very profound piece of advice: “A person’s spiritual state [ḥāl] that appears in his behavior speaks far more eloquently than a thousand spoken words.” A seeker of knowledge or truth should sit with a figure whose character, sincerity, and personality speak directly to him—not merely with someone eloquent in speech but empty in practice. Psychologically and scientifically, humans have a system called mirror neurons in the brain. This system makes us more easily influenced, imitative, and moved by real actions we see directly [role modeling] than by mere verbal instructions we hear. In Islam, the most effective form of daʿwah is _daʿwah bil ḥāl_—daʿwah through example in conduct. When a person’s inner self is pure and sincere, the aura it radiates will cool the soul of anyone who looks at him, even before he opens his mouth to speak.

Allah SWT reminds us very beautifully in the Qur’an about the importance of consistency between speech and real action:

أَتَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبِرِّ وَتَنسَوْنَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَتْلُونَ الْكِتَابَ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

“Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?”[QS. Al-Baqarah: 44]

Rasulullah ﷺ is a real example where the nobility of his character preached before his tongue did. Regarding the radiance of a sincere heart that brings peace to others, the Prophet ﷺ said in a hadith:

أَوْلِيَاءُ اللَّهِ الَّذِينَ إِذَا رُؤُوا ذُكِرَ اللَّهَ

“The awliyāʾ of Allah are those who, when they are seen, those who see them are immediately reminded of Allah.”[HR. Al-Bazzār]

2. Lessons and Message

Let us recall a very touching true story from the pages of Islamic history. There was a great scholar known to be very quiet. One day, a young man who was under severe stress, heartbroken by life’s trials and on the verge of despair, came to the scholar’s gathering. Throughout the session, the scholar did not deliver a long lecture; he simply sat calmly, recited a few verses, then looked at his students with a gaze full of compassion, sincerity, and inner peace. The heartbroken young man just sat in the corner, gazing at the serene face of the scholar. Miraculously, the young man’s tears flowed heavily, and instantly the entire weight in his chest seemed to vanish. After the gathering, people asked, “What did you get from the Imam’s lecture?” The young man answered while crying with emotion, “He didn’t speak much to me with his tongue. But seeing the inner peace and the beauty of character radiating from his body, my parched soul immediately said: ‘O self, submit to Allah like that righteous man submits.’ His character healed my heart without a single word.” How moving to see the power of a sincere soul.

So we can remember the importance of the language of character in a relaxed way, let us use an analogy about “A Perfume Bottle and an Empty Bottle.”Imagine two bottles placed on a table. The first bottle is an expensive, original perfume bottle with an exquisite fragrance. This bottle’s cap is tightly closed, it stays silent, makes no sound, and has no loudspeaker for promotion. Yet, because its contents are truly quality perfume, its fragrance still seeps out and makes anyone who approaches feel refreshed and comfortable. Now, look at the second bottle beside it. This bottle is an empty syrup bottle covered in dust. But around its neck is a small speaker that blares very loudly every five seconds: “Hello everyone! I am the world’s most fragrant French perfume! Please believe me, I smell amazing!”What would you do? You would surely laugh while flicking the empty bottle, “Even if you shout until your throat falls off, if you’re completely empty inside, you’re still just a noisy empty bottle, dude!”Funny and thought-provoking, isn’t it? Many of us on social media act like that noisy empty bottle. We are busy typing statuses about piety, making fiery advice videos, but in real daily life we are harsh to family, stingy to neighbors, and full of arrogance. We forget that people do not need the “speaker” of our theories; people long for the “fragrance” of character and real sincerity from our inner selves!

3. Conclusion & Closing

Friends, the profound moral message from today’s reflection is an invitation to change our daʿwah and life strategy: let us produce fewer words, and start producing real actions. Do not be busy editing words to look righteous on screen, but be busy purifying the heart so our personality can truly inspire others. Make ourselves like a perfume bottle that cools. Let our humility speak when we are insulted, let our generosity speak when we see others in hardship, and let the peace on our face calm others when they look at us. Because in the end, the best sermon that has ever existed on the face of the earth is not the sermon written on paper, but the sermon that lives in the daily behavior of a Allah-fearing believer.

May Allah SWT purify our inner selves from the falseness of words, and adorn us with the beauty of character that eloquently soothes the souls of others.
