1. Opening
Friends whose hearts yearn for tranquility, in this modern age, the most widespread mental illnesses attacking humans are anxiety [worry about the future] and depression [deep sorrow over the past]. We often think the cure for all of it is luxury or human recognition. Yet Islamic psychology teaches that true peace belongs only to those whose inner selves are connected to Allah.
Interestingly, Allah SWT gives criteria that are utterly universal, logical, and simple for anyone who wants to become His beloved. The requirement is not being able to fly or walk on water, but two things: firm faith and consistent taqwa. When someone reaches this level, Allah grants an extraordinary inner guarantee: their mind will be freed from fear of the worldly future, and their soul will not be tormented by grief over what has passed.[Waliyullah]Let us cool our souls by reflecting on Allah SWT’s words in the Qur’an:
أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ. الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ
“Unquestionably, the friends of Allah—there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were conscious of Allah.” [QS. Yunus: 62-63]
This inner tranquility of Allah’s beloved is also described by Rasulullah ﷺ in a Hadith Qudsi, where Allah becomes the absolute protector of all their senses and every step of life:
فَإِذَا أَحْبَبْتُهُ كُنْتُ سَمْعَهُ الَّذِي يَسْمَعُ بِهِ، وَبَصَرَهُ الَّذِي يُبْصِرُ بِهِ، وَيَدَهُ الَّتِي يَبْطِشُ بِهَا، وَرِجْلَهُ الَّتِي يَمْشِي بِهَا
“And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks.” [HR. Bukhari]
2. Lessons and Message
The precious message from this verse is: Do not complicate what Allah has made easy. Becoming a Waliyullah is not the exclusive right of certain people with supernatural powers. This is an open invitation to all of us. The key to a happy life is cheap: simply fix the faith in your chest, then prove it with taqwa in daily behavior.
Let us imagine a touching story of steadfastness from Ummu Sulaim, a noble female companion. One day, her young child passed away from illness while her husband, Abu Thalhah, was away at work. Instead of wailing hysterically, lamenting fate, or panicking about how to face her husband, Ummu Sulaim calmly bathed her child’s body, covered him with a cloth, and served her husband who had just returned home with her best smile, even preparing food. Only when her husband was full and calm did Ummu Sulaim gently ask, “My husband, if someone entrusts us with something, then asks for it back, are we allowed to withhold it?” Her husband replied, “Of course not.” That’s when Ummu Sulaim said, “Then relinquish our child who has been taken back by his Owner.” This is a real example of the soul of a Waliyullah: no grieving lament that damages faith, because her heart had already submitted to every decree of Allah.
So we can understand this casually and with a smile, let’s imagine you’re on a Luxury First Class Airplane. The pilot is the most senior, most skilled, and most experienced pilot in the world. When the plane shakes from bad weather, would you panic and run to the cockpit screaming, “Captain! Which way now? Right or left? I’m scared we’ll crash!”? No, right? It would be ridiculous for us to act like we know better than a senior pilot. You’d surely just sit back, listen to music, or go back to sleep, because you trust the pilot’s expertise 100%.[turbulence] Well, a Waliyullah is someone who realizes that the “Pilot” of this life is Allah, the All-Arranging. When their lives are shaken by storms of trials, mounting debt, or problems coming, they don’t panic excessively and don’t lament the past. They lean fully on Allah.
The funny thing is, we often get stressed and suffer anxiety because we love to act as if we’re “God’s assistant” who has to think about everything alone, when we’re just passengers! Just hand it over to Allah through faith and taqwa, and it’s settled, right?
3. Conclusion and Closing
Friends, in conclusion, the essence of being a Waliyullah is attaining true inner freedom. The definition of Allah’s beloved is so simple: faith and taqwa. The side effect is extraordinary: the disappearance of fear [La khawfun ‘alayhim] and the vanishing of sadness [Wa la hum yahzanun]. So let us retire from excessive anxiety about tomorrow, and let us stop lamenting yesterday’s failures. Focus on what we can do today to draw closer to Allah. Become His beloved, and He Himself will guarantee the tranquility in our hearts.
