1. Opening
Friends whose hearts long for Paradise, let us use the logic of faith for a moment. In this world, the most precious asset a human owns is his life, symbolized by the flow of blood. When a martyr steps onto the battlefield, he is giving the absolute most he has for Allah.Yet, let us look at a scholar. When they sit at a wooden desk, scratching with a pen, the only thing they expend is ink. Ink is cheap, simple, and trivial in the eyes of men.But scientifically, before the scales of the Hereafter, the most minimal and simple thing from a scholar actually outweighs the most maximal and costly sacrifice from a martyr. Why? Because it is the knowledge poured into that ink which gives birth to the sincerity in the martyr’s chest before he falls
Allah SWT illustrates the grandeur of this rank in the Qur’an:
قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ۗ إِنَّمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ
“Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those of understanding will remember.” [QS. Az-Zumar: 9]
This noble rank is affirmed by Rasulullah ﷺ in his saying:
فَضْلُ الْعَالِمِ عَلَى الْعَابِدِ كَفَضْلِي عَلَى أَدْنَاكُمْ
“The superiority of a scholar over a devout worshipper is like my superiority over the least of you.” [HR. At-Tirmidhi]
2. Lessons and Message
The great message from this comparison is: Allah does not judge something merely by the physical magnitude of its sacrifice, but by the magnitude of its long-term impact on humanity. The blood of martyrs saves one generation in its time, but the ink of scholars saves the creed of millions until the end of time.
Let us recall the story of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal. In his twilight years, his frail body had to endure the lashes of a tyrant ruler’s executioner for upholding the principles of Islamic creed. Each time the leather whip tore his skin until blood flowed, he did not weep from the pain. What made him sob uncontrollably was seeing his students outside the prison scrambling to dip their pens into the leftover ink he had used to write hadith. He said in his heart, how deeply this ummah thirsts for the guidance of knowledge amid the darkness of trials. His blood dripped onto the prison floor, yet the ink of his knowledge remains alive, reviving our hearts to this day. To make it easy to grasp, let’s imagine a massive music concert. There’s a stage crew member whose work is incredibly hard. He hauls 100-kg generators, climbs 10-meter scaffolding, sweating buckets and blistering his hands [this is like extraordinary physical sacrifice]. Then comes the maestro or music composer. He just sits relaxed in a cushioned chair, neatly dressed, fragrant, and pulls a small pen from his pocket. He merely scribbles musical notes on paper [this is like the ink of scholars].But guess who gets paid the most and is most honored at that concert? The composer, of course! Without his casual pen strokes, the stage crew wouldn’t know what song to play, and the concert would fall apart. So isn’t it only right that Allah places scholars at the highest rank? Because they are the “composers” of Islamic civilization!
3. Conclusion and Closing
Happy brothers and sisters, in closing, this comparative lesson teaches us a heavenly secret: If you want to hold a lofty value in the sight of Allah, honor knowledge. Something deemed simple in this world—like reading religious books, listening to lectures, or sharing beneficial writings—may carry colossal value in the Hereafter.
Let us cherish every drop of ink from the scholars that reaches us. Do not let their books become mere dusty displays in our cabinets, while they traded their time, energy, and tears to nourish our souls with faith
