1. Opening
Beloved friends whom Allah has blessed, In the treasury of Islamic spiritual science, knowledge is not merely a series of memorized legal texts [fiqh], but a light that gives birth to fear and deep recognition of Allah [Ma‘rifatullah]. One of the great scholars of the tābi‘ut tābi‘īn, Imam Sufyān al-Thawrī, divided scholars into three types or classes based on the combination of their mastery of Sharia knowledge and their inner recognition of Allah.First, the ‘Ulamā’ Kāmil (Complete): The figure who knows Allah inwardly while also deeply mastering the laws of His commands. Second, the ‘Ulamā’ of Worship: The figure whose heart is filled with fear of Allah, yet has minimal detailed knowledge of practical Sharia law. Third, the ‘Ulamā’ Sū’ (Evil): The figure who is academically very skilled in mastering legal texts, but whose heart is empty of knowing Allah. As a result, his knowledge is only used to seek loopholes [ḥiyal] to indulge worldly desires.
This typology aligns with the portrait of true scholars described in the Qur’an, where knowledge must be directly proportional to the fear of Him:
اِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللّٰهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمٰۤؤُا ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَزِيْزٌ غَفُوْرٌ
“Only those of His servants who have knowledge truly fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Almighty, Most Forgiving.” [QS. Fāṭir: 28]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also gave a stern warning about the danger of learned people whose tongues and brains are sharp, but whose hearts are hypocritical:
إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي كُلُّ مُنَافِقٍ عَلِيمِ اللِّسَانِ
“What I fear most for my ummah is every hypocrite who is eloquent in speech [knowledgeable with his tongue].”[HR. Aḥmad]
2. Lessons and Message
Sharia knowledge without ma‘rifah_—recognition of Allah—will give birth to intellectual arrogance and the skill to manipulate religion. Conversely, _ma‘rifah without Sharia knowledge will cause a person to go astray in misguided worship. The highest integrity of a seeker of knowledge is when his understanding of fiqh beautifully combines with the trembling fear in his heart when Allah’s name is mentioned.
How sorrowful and heartbreaking it is when we see this sight in the end times. There is a religious figure who is very intelligent, with a string of titles, and thousands of books memorized. Yet when a tyrannical ruler or greedy businessman comes carrying a suitcase of money, he kneels before them. With the brilliance of his brain, he starts flipping through the pages of the holy book, searching for legal loopholes, and issues a false fatwa to make the unlawful lawful so his master is pleased.The tears of the ummah fall seeing religion sold cheaply in the marketplace of politics and business. He has the knowledge of the prophets in his head, but the mentality of a thief in his heart
Having vast fiqh knowledge but not knowing Allah—the _‘Ulamā’ Sū’_—is like a Super-Genius Electrician, but he does not believe that an electric shock is deadly. He knows the theory, he knows how to connect the positive and negative wires, but because he underestimates the power of the current, he dares to cut a high-voltage cable while barefoot in a puddle of water just to grab a fallen coin. The result? Yes, he gets “fried” instantly!Let us not become “religious mechanics” who are busy fixing other people’s legal matters, while we ourselves die electrocuted by Allah’s wrath because we dare to play with the boundaries of His law for worldly desires.
3. Conclusion and Closing
Brothers and sisters , true scholars [Kāmil] are those who make their knowledge a lantern to walk closer to Allah, not a currency to amass wealth or popularity. Intellectual brilliance will never save us before Allah if our hearts are empty of fear and reverence for Him.
Let us pray that Allah always grants us beneficial knowledge—knowledge that not only resides in the head and prolongs debates on social media, but knowledge that seeps into the heart and becomes droplets of taqwā, tears of repentance, and integrity in daily life.
