1. Preface
Have you ever wondered when exactly we begin to look human? In the first 41 days in the mother’s womb, we are just a clump of cells resembling the embryo of other creatures. Yet, precisely on the 42nd day, a great miracle occurs.Modern science, through ultrasound and electron microscopes, has discovered that at this threshold, the embryo undergoes a drastic transformation. The eyes and ears begin to form clearly, skin and flesh begin to cover the skeleton, and on days 43 to 45, the first brain-wave activity is detected. This is the sacred moment when we are “designated” as a complete human being with unique features. A sign that life is not coincidence, but a meticulously planned design
.2. Explanation
This precise timing was stated by the Messenger of Allah SAW 1,400 years ago, long before the microscope was invented:
إِذَا مَرَّ بِالنُّطْفَةِ اثْنَتَانِ وَأَرْبَعُونَ لَيْلَةً، بَعَثَ اللهُ إِلَيْهَا مَلَكًا، فَصَوَّرَهَا وَخَلَقَ سَمْعَهَا وَبَصَرَهَا وَجِلْدَهَا وَلَحْمَهَا وَعِظَامَهَا
“When the nuthfah [fertilized sperm] has passed forty-two nights, Allah sends an angel to it, who then shapes the nuthfah; He creates its hearing, its sight, its skin, its flesh, and its bones.” (HR. Muslim)Allah SWT also says in the Qur’an:
هُوَ الَّذِي يُصَوِّرُكُمْ فِي الْأَرْحَامِ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ ۚ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
“It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (QS. Ali ‘Imran: 6)
3. Lessons and Message
The miracle of day 42 teaches us about Self-Worth and Honor. From the age of 6 weeks in the womb, we already have “rights” as a complete human in the sight of Allah. If at that tiny age Allah has already sent His angel to guard and form us, then is it fitting for us to belittle our own lives? This fact also serves as a stern reminder to those who easily commit abortion; that after 42 days, there is a “human” struggling to live with a real heartbeat and brain waves.
Imagine a pregnant mother who does not know what is happening inside her womb. On the 42nd day, while the mother may be feeling nauseous or tired, in the dark confines of the womb, an Angel is working under God’s command. The Angel is “painting” the lines of its eyes, shaping the lobes of its ears, and arranging its flesh tissue. While the world has yet to know the baby, Allah is already busy attending to every tiny detail of its body. We were never alone, even in the darkness of the womb.
The human embryo before 42 days is like “Unmolded Dough.” It has potential, but its form is not yet clear. Day 42 is the moment when the Maestro presses the perfect human mold onto that dough. Without that mold, we might only be a collection of cells without identity. Religion and Science are two eyewitnesses standing before the same molding table, confirming one another.
Some atheists often ask, “Where’s the proof that Prophet Muhammad knew science?” We just need to answer: “Our Prophet did not need a laboratory or a billion-dollar high-tech microscope. He simply received a ‘text message’ from Heaven about what happens on day 42.” If modern scientists needed 14 centuries to prove it, who is actually slower? We just need to prostrate longer, not argue more.
4 . Conclusion
The consistency between the Prophet’s SAW hadith and modern embryology regarding day 42 is irrefutable proof that Islam is the religion of truth. Science is not the enemy of religion, but a servant that explains God’s greatness.Let us be grateful for the form Allah shaped on that 42nd day by guarding it from sin. Thank You, Allah, You have formed us in the best of forms.
