Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

1. Preface
Have you ever reflected on how the transition from day to night feels so gentle? Scientifically, this phenomenon is only possible if the earth is round and rotates on its axis. If the earth were flat and stationary, the sun would only illuminate one side permanently, or day would switch to night abruptly like flipping a light switch.Yet our earth “dances” in an extremely smooth rotation. It is the roundness of the earth that makes possible the gradation of an orange twilight and a blue dawn. The beauty of this rotation maintains the world’s temperature balance so that no part is frozen forever or scorched eternally. This is the “breath” of our planet, regulated by the hand of the Almighty Creator.
2. Explanation
Qur’anic Evidence and Hadith
The Qur’an describes the earth’s round shape with wording that is both brilliant and poetic:
اللَّيْلِ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِالْحَقِّ ۖ يُكَوِّرُ اللَّيْلَ عَلَى النَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّهَارَ عَلَى
“He created the heavens and the earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night...” (QS. Az-Zumar: 5)
(The word Yukawwiru means to wrap in a circular manner, like wrapping a turban around a round head.)The Messenger of Allah SAW also gave an indication about the sun and celestial bodies continuously moving in their orbits without ceasing:
إِنَّهَا تَجْرِي حَتَّى تَنْتَهِيَ إِلَى مُسْتَقَرِّهَا تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ
“Indeed, it [the sun] keeps moving until it reaches its resting place beneath the Throne.” (HR. Bukhari)
(The meaning of this hadith aligns with Ibn Abbas’s explanation that celestial bodies remain on their orbits and never stop or vanish, indicating a rotating solar system.)
3. Lessons and Message
The knowledge of the round earth teaches us about Breadth of Heart. A round earth shows that there is no end to a journey before we return to the starting point. So it is with life; the goodness we cast will revolve and return to us. If an earth so vast obeys its orbit, why do we—small humans—often feel self-righteous and refuse to revolve according to the Creator’s rules? Be like the earth: calm on the surface, yet constantly moving forward in obedience. In the 11th century, a Muslim scientist named Al-Biruni stood on a high mountain peak. With only geometry and faith in the verses of the Qur’an, he succeeded in calculating the earth’s circumference. His calculation differed only slightly from today’s satellite measurements. How moving it is to see a servant love his Lord so deeply that he read the universe with such precision to prove the truth of His words. Knowledge and faith are two wings that carried him flying toward the truth. The earth rotating on its axis is like a “giant spinning top.” If the top stops spinning, it will fall and wobble. So it is with faith in the chest. Faith must keep “spinning” through dhikr and righteous deeds so we remain stable against the gravitational pull of a world full of trials. If the rotation of faith stops, the balance of our life collapses. In the past, there was a debate whether the earth was round or flat. If the earth were flat like a dining table, perhaps people living at the edge would have fallen into the cosmic abyss long ago from slipping during a morning jog! Fortunately, Allah created the earth round and gave it gravity. So no matter how far you try to run from reality or flee from debt collectors, you will still revolve on the same earth. There is no hiding place from Allah’s earth, so we might as well “revolve” toward His path.
4. Conclusion
The harmony between the Prophet’s SAW hadith, the Qur’an’s indications, and modern science proves that Islam is a religion that transcends time. 1,400 years ago, in the Arabian desert, the Messenger had already brought news of a circular earth—a fact humanity only understood centuries later.Let us be grateful for our existence on this beautiful earth by continually seeking knowledge and strengthening faith. For in the end, all knowledge will lead to one conclusion: Glory be to Allah, who created everything with perfect precision
