1. Preface
At a glance, mosquitoes and flies are often dismissed as trivial, annoying insects. Yet, through the lens of modern science and spiritual guidance, these two tiny creatures are masterpieces of biological technology that prove the perfection of the Creator’s design
.2. Explanation
Biological Technology and Anatomy of the Mosquito
The mosquito is, in truth, a biological flying machine equipped with advanced features that surpass human technology:Complex Heart System: The mosquito has three hearts; one central heart as the main pump, and two additional hearts that function specifically to move both wings independently. High Aerodynamics: Its wings can beat up to 4,000 times per second, producing its characteristic buzzing sound while maintaining precise flight stability. Navigation & Sensory System: It possesses a “radar” for detecting heat and carbon dioxide, as well as a blood-analysis system to select the appropriate type of blood. Natural Medical Intervention: It injects an anesthetic substance so its victim feels no pain, and an anticoagulant (blood thinner) so blood can be easily drawn through its slender proboscis. Adaptive Legs: Equipped with suction pads to cling to smooth surfaces (glass) and claws to grip rough surfaces.
3. Lessons and Message
The existence of the mosquito is specifically immortalized in the Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 26. This verse is an answer to those who question why the Almighty God would create a creature deemed contemptible.
“Indeed, Allah is not ashamed to present an example—that of a mosquito or what is even smaller. As for those who believe, they know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, ‘What did Allah intend by this as an example?’ He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 26)
Similar to the mosquito, the fly carries a profound scientific message about human limitations. As explained in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 73, human technology will never be able to create a fly. Biologically, flies possess maneuverability surpassing that of a fighter jet and a bodily chemical system that instantly transforms food so it cannot be retrieved by humans. Moreover, modern science has begun researching antibacterial substances in the fly’s body as an antidote, in line with the hadith of the Prophet SAW which indicates a balance between disease and cure on its two wings.
4. Conclusion
In closing, this spiritual dimension is reinforced by the Messenger of Allah SAW, who used the anatomy of a mosquito to illustrate how small and fleeting the value of this world is in the sight of Allah SWT.
“If the world to Allah were equal to a mosquito’s wing, He would not give a disbeliever a drink of water from it.” (HR. Tirmidhi)
Through the parables of the mosquito and the fly, humans are invited to reflect that creating something small with extraordinary complexity is proof of greatness equal to creating the universe. For the believer, all creation is a sign of His power, while the hadith above reminds us that if this world is not even worth a single mosquito’s wing, then the Hereafter is what must truly be our ultimate goal
