For many, Ramadan is often perceived as a "finish line"—a fleeting annual spiritual festival that arrives and departs in a blur. However, for the Salafush Shalih (the Pious Predecessors), Ramadan was the center of gravity. Like the sun at the heart of a solar system, Ramadan serves as the axis of energy whose gravitational pull keeps their entire year of worship and devotion fixed within its proper orbit.

1. Longing Beyond the Constraints of Time

The righteous predecessors did not view Ramadan as a sudden guest. For six months before the crescent moon even appeared, their tongues were already moist with supplications, pleading with Allah to extend their lives to reach it. This is anchored in the account of Mu’alla bin Al-Fadhl, a scholar from the Tabi’ut Tabi’in, as recorded by Imam Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali in Lathaif al-Ma’arif:

كَانُوا يَدْعُونَ اللَّهَ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ أَنْ يُبَلِّغَهُمْ رَمَضَانَ ، ثُمَّ يَدْعُونَهُ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ أَنْ يَتَقَبَّلَهُ مِنْهُمْ

"They used to supplicate to Allah for six months to allow them to reach Ramadan, and then they would supplicate to Him for the following six months to accept it from them."

This represents an extraordinary management of spiritual longing. If we calculate the two periods, their entire year—all twelve months—revolved around Ramadan. The first six months were a season of preparation and anticipation, while the remaining six were a season of evaluation and hope.

2. Supplication as a Spiritual Bridge

One of the prayers that fueled their yearning was narrated by Yahya bin Abi Kathir:

اَللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْنِيْ إِلَى رَمَضَانَ وَسَلِّمْ لِيْ رَمَضَانَ وَتَسَلَّمْهُ مِنِّيْ مُتَقَبَّلاً

"O Allah, deliver me safely to Ramadan, secure Ramadan for me (by enabling my worship), and accept it from me with a most gracious acceptance."

3. The Dynamics of Ar-Raja’ and Al-Khauf

This way of life fosters a profoundly healthy mental equilibrium for a believer:

  • Ar-Raja’ (Optimistic Hope): They pursued Ramadan knowing it is the "grand sale" of divine forgiveness, where rewards are multiplied beyond the logic of human mathematics, and where Laylatul Qadr resides. This is the side of enthusiasm that ignites a passion for worship.
  • Al-Khauf (Productive Apprehension): Once Ramadan concluded, they did not succumb to spiritual arrogance or feel "purified." Instead, a productive concern emerged: "Was my fasting merely hunger and thirst? Was my prostration truly accepted?" This fear is what shielded them from spiritual pride and ensured their consistency in deeds for the next six months.

4. Ramadan is Not Seasonal

To establish Ramadan as one's center of gravity means refusing to let our faith "spin out of orbit" once Eid al-Fitr arrives.

If the Salaf required twelve months to "celebrate" a single month of Ramadan, it proves that the quality of a believer is determined by how long the essence of Ramadan resonates within their character. Ramadan is not merely a ritual; it is a recharging process designed to ensure the light of virtue continues to shine brilliantly throughout all other months.
