1. Preface
Extraordinary, God-loving friends, psychologically, fear is a self-defense mechanism. Yet excessive fear of creation is called Anxiety of Influence_—an anxiety that arises because we feel our fate is determined by external forces. Scientifically, a soul that fears only the consequences of its own deeds—sin—will have remarkably stable mental health. This happens because it shifts the locus of control from outside (_external locus of control) to within oneself. A free soul is one that realizes all worldly threats are merely variables subject to one grand constant: the Will of God.This conviction is reflected in the steadfastness of the prophets when facing immense pressure:
مَا مِنْ دَاۤبَّةٍ اِلَّا هُوَ اٰخِذٌۢ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا ۗ اِنَّ رَبِّيْ عَلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيْمٍ
“…There is no moving creature but He holds its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.” (QS. Hud: 56) The Messenger ﷺ also equipped us with certainty of Allah’s absolute protection:
وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ الأُمَّةَ لَوِ اجْتَمَعَتْ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْفَعُوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَنْفَعُوكَ إِلاَّ بِشَيْءٍ قَدْ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ لَكَ
“Know that if the entire nation were to gather to benefit you, they could not benefit you except with something Allah has already decreed for you.” (HR. Tirmidzi)2. Explanation
Our religion can be summarized in one principle: fear nothing except your sins. Why? Because all the tyrants and powers you deem mighty in this world are actually creatures whose forelocks are held by your Lord. They have no power except by His permission. The only thing that can separate you from His protection is your own sin. So focus on repairing your relationship with the Owner of Power, not trembling before the shadows of creation. Imagine a believer who remains calm in the face of great threats. When asked his secret, he answers peacefully, “I only fear that my Lord would be displeased because of my sin. As for their threats—aren’t they also servants whose breath is in my Lord’s hand?”The analogy is like ten ferocious beasts, yet their necks are tied with a strong rope held by the All-Wise, All-Just One. If you must pass those beasts, where will your eyes turn? Will you busy yourself pleading with the snarling beasts, or draw near and seek protection from the Holder of the Rope? The heroism of faith is to focus on the Holder of the Rope, not on the beasts. We can be funny sometimes; we tremble in mortal fear when the boss is angry or a “powerful person” threatens our position, as if they were gods who determine fate. Yet strangely, we stay casual when committing sins that clearly anger Allah. That’s like being afraid of a mosquito bite in front of you, but not afraid of a giant dragon that has already opened its mouth behind you! Remember, your boss can get a toothache too. Don’t make someone who still needs painkillers a “god” in your heart.
3. Lessons and Message
The fundamental lesson for us is that fearing anything besides Allah is a tiring form of enslavement of the soul. The moral message: return the authority over your fate to Allah alone. Make fear of sin an alarm to stay vigilant, but make fear of Allah the source of your courage before the entire world. If you are at peace with Allah, then no creature can disturb your inner tranquility.
4. Conclusion
Beloved brothers and sisters, build your courage upon pure tawheed. Be a free person who fears only your sins. If Allah is with you, who can oppose you? And if Allah is displeased with you, who can help you? Return to Allah, for He alone holds the forelock of every breathing creature on this earth.
