1. Preface
Beloved, God-loving friends, in social psychology, humans who lack emotional attachment to their community (lack of belonging) tend to experience existential emptiness. Scientifically, when a person has a vision to benefit many people, the brain produces oxytocin and dopamine, creating long-term happiness. Being part of the ummah is not just an identity on an ID card—it is a synchronization of the soul. A great nation does not only need heroes who died in the past, but desperately needs “living heroes” today—those who dedicate their expertise to collective progress.Allah SWT has designated the best title for those who care about the social order:
كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ اُمَّةٍ اُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُوْنَ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ
“You are the best nation produced for mankind—you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.” (QS. Ali ‘Imran: 110)
The Messenger ﷺ also set the standard of human nobility on the principle of benefit:
خَيْرُ النَّاسِ أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ
“The best of people are those most beneficial to others.” (HR. Ahmad & Thabrani)
2. Explanation
The most dangerous thing in life is when you feel you are “not part” of this ummah. When you see the destruction or suffering of your fellow believers and simply say, “That’s not my business,” you are betraying your own conscience. Don’t just be a spectator in the nation’s history; become an expert in your field so you can be the reason behind the strength of this ummah. Imagine a talented young man who rejects luxury abroad to build an irrigation system in his remote village. He realizes that a true hero is not only one whose name is written on a tombstone, but one whose hands work to wipe away his nation’s tears. He cannot sleep soundly if another part of the body of this ummah is in pain.This ummah and nation are like a great ship in the vast ocean, and you are one of its crew. If you only care about the cleanliness of your private cabin while the lower hull is leaking, then you are heading toward destruction together. A leak over there is a real threat to you here. We can be funny sometimes; we often complain on social media about the ummah being left behind, but when asked about our real role, our answer is that we’re busy binge-watching dramas or just lying around. We want this ummah to be strong like a lion, but our lifestyle is still like a cat that loves purring on the sofa. Remember, this nation will not change with mere likes and shares of sad news. Stop being a commentator—start being a contributor!
3. Lessons and Message
The profound lesson for us is that maturity of faith is directly proportional to social concern. The moral message: find one area of specialization and intend to help the ummah through that path. Your existence must be a solution, not just another addition to the statistical burden. Don’t ask what the ummah has given you—ask what you have given to strengthen the structure of this ummah.
4. Conclusion
Beloved brothers and sisters, rekindle your sense of belonging to the ummah. Be the reason this ummah rises. Be an expert in your profession with the intention to serve. Because in the end, we will not be asked how greatly we lived alone, but how much our existence benefited the nation and the religion.
