1. Introduction

Friends whom Allah has blessed, in our society there is often a mistaken dichotomy, as if religious knowledge and worldly knowledge are two things that contradict each other. From an Islamic epistemological perspective, all beneficial knowledge ultimately comes from one source: Allah ﷻ. Religious knowledge (manqūl) was revealed through revelation to order the heart and guide the soul, while worldly knowledge (ma‘qūl) such as science, medicine, and technology is discovered through sunnatullāh to order the physical world and bring benefit to the earth.Scientifically, a lopsided civilization is one that masters only one of them. Mastering worldly knowledge without religion produces material destruction and spiritual emptiness, while understanding religious knowledge without worldly knowledge leaves the ummah weak and dependent on other nations. Islam commands us to integrate both in harmony.

Allah ﷻ rebukes those who only look at the surface of the world without seeing the reality of the Hereafter:

يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ

“They know only the outward appearance of the life of this world, and they are heedless of the Hereafter.” (QS. Ar-Rūm: 7)

Therefore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ always encouraged us to master worldly expertise for the benefit of the ummah, while affirming that professionalism in technical worldly matters is recognized in Islam:

أَنْتُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِأُمُورِ دُنْيَاكُمْ

“You know better about the affairs of your world.” (HR. Muslim)

2. Lessons and Messages

The profound moral message of this topic is the spiritualization of worldly knowledge. When a Muslim doctor treats a patient, an engineer builds a bridge, or a farmer plants rice with the intention of worship and helping others, their worldly activity is automatically transformed into reward for the Hereafter. Don’t confine the value of the Hereafter to the prayer mat alone, for Allah’s earth is a vast field of deeds.Let us remember the story of the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Muhammad Al-Fatih. He was not a leader who only excelled at dhikr in the mosque, but also a military strategist who mastered six world languages from a young age. He spent his nights in prostration, weeping and begging for Allah’s help—religious knowledge—while his days were spent designing the most advanced giant cannons of his time alongside scientists—worldly knowledge. It was this combination that produced a victory that changed the course of history. What is sad today is that we see some young Muslims who study worldly fields—such as medicine or digital technology—growing increasingly distant from the mosque and negligent in prayer. Conversely, there are those who study religious knowledge but close their eyes to the development of science and technology, becoming passive and powerless in the face of the challenges of the times. This separation is truly disheartening for the future of the ummah.Religious knowledge and worldly knowledge are like the two wings of a mighty eagle. The right wing is religious knowledge—faith and character—while the left wing is worldly knowledge—science and professional expertise. If the bird has a strong right wing but a paralyzed left wing, or vice versa, it will never be able to soar high into the sky. It will only circle on the ground and become easy prey for predators. The Muslim ummah will only rise to lead civilization when both wings of knowledge are strong and flap in harmony.

There is a story about a young man who claimed he wanted to focus solely on “knowledge of the Hereafter” and considered worldly knowledge trivial. One day, his motorcycle broke down in the middle of the road. He got off, then recited prayers for safety with deep devotion in front of the engine for an hour, hoping for a miracle that the motorcycle would start on its own.Seeing this, a mechanic approached, smiled, and took a screwdriver to clean the spark plug, which was simply dirty from oil. In two minutes, the engine started right up. The young man was amazed. “Wow, your spiritual practice is truly extraordinary, sir!” The mechanic replied, “Brother, prayer is important as a connection to the heavens to move the heart, but knowing how to clean a spark plug is knowledge of the earth. If the spark plug is dirty and you only keep reciting prayers without making the effort to fix it, that motorcycle won’t run until the Day of Judgment!”The lesson: Don’t pit divine decree and prayer against the effort of knowledge. Religion commands us to pray, but worldly knowledge shows us the technical way to solve problems on the ground. Both must be used together.

3. Conclusion and Closing

Dear brothers and sisters, Islam is a complete religion. Islam never commands us to choose between being pious but left behind, or being intelligent but astray. Islam educates us to be servants who are intellectually sharp and spiritually pure. Let us remove the barrier between types of knowledge. Make religious knowledge your compass for direction, and make worldly knowledge the vessel for navigating the ocean of life.May Allah ﷻ grant us balance in life, make our worldly knowledge count as worship, and make our religious knowledge a light on the path to His Paradise
