1. Introduction

Friends whom Allah has blessed, on the journey of seeking knowledge, challenges and obstacles are inevitable. Psychologically and scientifically, the process of learning does require great mental energy, an open heart, and strict time management. The greatest obstacles often arise from within ourselves—in the form of laziness (procrastination), exhaustion (burnout), and the temptation to be easily satisfied.Yet Islam views every obstacle and weariness in seeking knowledge not as futile, but as a means of erasing sins and as steps toward honor. The primary solution to overcome all these obstacles is to rectify one’s intention, build consistency (istiqāmah), and accompany it with firm patience

.Allah ﷻ gives the key to success for those who remain patient in the process:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اصْبِرُوا وَصَابِرُوا وَرَابِطُوا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

“O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.” (QS. Āli ‘Imrān: 200)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also gave a practical solution in the form of a supplication for protection against the greatest mental obstacles of man—weakness and laziness:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness, laziness, cowardice, and senility. And I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.” (HR. Bukhari)

2. Lessons and Message

The path of knowledge is never paved with a soft red carpet. It is a narrow trail full of sharp pebbles. Financial hardship, limited facilities, or difficulty understanding a lesson are not reasons to stop. The solution is not to lower our goals, but to raise our level of patience and effort.Let us remember the struggle of the hadith scholar Ibn Mandah. He left his hometown to seek knowledge at a young age. The obstacle of distance, limited provisions, and longing for his family—he swallowed all of it. He walked from one country to another just to collect hadith. What is both touching and heartbreaking is that he was only able to return home and reunite with his family after wandering in pursuit of knowledge for 45 years! When he returned, his hair had turned white and his body had grown frail, but his chest was filled with millions of pearls of hadith. Compare that with us today: the moment the power goes out for an hour or our internet data runs out, we feel like the most miserable people alive and immediately give up on studying.Obstacles in seeking knowledge are like the friction on a vehicle’s tires. Without friction, the tires would slip and spin in place without moving forward. Obstacles, trials, and difficulties in learning are actually the “friction” of life that Allah places to give our minds grip. It is this difficulty that shapes us into resilient scholars and scientists, not into people with fragile spirits.

There is a story about a student who complained to his kiai at the pesantren. “Kiai, my obstacle in memorizing this book is huge. Every time I open the first page, I feel overwhelmingly sleepy. After I read two lines, my eyes shut completely. What’s the solution, Kiai?”The kiai smiled wisely and replied, “The solution is easy, my son. Starting tomorrow, whenever you want to sleep at night and can’t close your eyes because of insomnia, don’t take sleeping pills. Just open your book and read two lines—I guarantee you’ll fall sound asleep within seconds!”The lesson: Drowsiness and laziness when holding a book of knowledge is a disease affecting millions. The solution is not to surrender to sleepiness, but to train ourselves to push a little at a time. Shaitan is very cunning: when we hold a phone we can stay awake until dawn, but when we hold a book, five minutes feel like five centuries. Fight that obstacle with discipline!

3. Conclusion and Closing

Friends, obstacles in seeking knowledge are Allah’s way of sifting out who among us is truly sincere in yearning for knowledge, and who is merely following the crowd. The solution to every obstacle never comes from outside—it comes from a steel-like resolve within the chest. Remember the saying of the early scholars: “Knowledge will not give you any part of itself until you give it all of yourself.”May Allah ﷻ remove laziness from our hearts, make all our affairs easy, and turn every fatigue we experience in seeking knowledge into a storehouse of reward that flows abundantly
