1. Introduction

Epistemologically, rigid religiosity often stems from a failure to understand the scale of priorities. Fiqh al-Awlawiyyat (Priorities), Fiqh al-Muwazanat (Balancing), and Fiqh al-Waqi’ (Reality) are mental navigation tools that bring calm. This body of knowledge teaches that religion is not merely a frozen text, but a living guidance. Understanding when to prioritize social obligations over personal supererogatory worship is a form of spiritual intelligence that safeguards our mental health and social harmony.

Evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith

"Do you consider providing water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque equal to one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the way of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah." (QS. At-Tawbah : 19)[19]

"Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, your self has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. So give each who has a right its due." (HR. Bukhari)

2. Lessons and Messages

Goodness done at the wrong time can become something harmful. The wise are those who can read reality; those who know that smiling at a sick mother is far more important than performing endless supererogatory prayers while leaving her lonely. That is true balancing (muwazanat).Have we ever heard the story of Abdullah bin Mubarak, the great scholar? While on his way to Hajj, he saw a little child picking up a dead chicken from the trash to feed his starving family. Without hesitation, he canceled his Hajj, gave all his Hajj funds to that poor family, and returned home. He prioritized a human life (reality) over a Hajj that was supererogatory for him at that moment. That night, many Hajj pilgrims dreamt that the Hajj most accepted by Allah was that of Abdullah bin Mubarak, even though he never reached Makkah.Practicing religion without understanding fiqh of priorities is like watering plants in a heavy downpour. The intention is good—wanting to give water—but the reality is the plant already has enough. If continued, its roots will rot instead. A Wasathiyah Muslim knows when to carry an umbrella, when to bring a bucket, and when to simply stand still and observe the weather. There’s a type of person whose religious zeal burns hot, but whose fiqh of reality is low. For example, a husband wants to do da’wah out of town for months, but at home his wife is panicking because the gas cylinder is empty and the children’s school fees are unpaid. The husband says, "Don’t worry, Allah will take care of you!" This isn’t tawakkul; it’s “creative tawakkul” to dodge responsibility. Don’t be so busy tending to “Paradise” far away that you create “Hell” inside your own home.

3. Conclusion

Dear brothers and sisters, Wasathiyah is the art of putting things in their proper place. Let us keep learning to distinguish what is important from what is urgent, what is principle from what is technical. With fiqh of priorities and reality, our Islam will feel more beautiful, more reasonable, and more grounded on earth
