1. Introduction

Dear friends beloved by Allah, have you ever imagined someone working hard all day, drenched in sweat, only to return home without a single cent because they followed the wrong procedure? It’s exhausting and heartbreaking. That is the analogy for someone who is eager in worship yet neglects knowledge. In Islam, worship is not merely physical movement or a ritual devoid of meaning. Worship is an offering from the servant to the Creator, and it has established rules. For our acts of worship to bear reward and be accepted by Allah, they must stand upon a foundation of sound knowledge. Without knowledge, a person’s deeds risk being rejected.

Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā warns in the Qur’an about those whose deeds are lost :

قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِالْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالًا الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ

صُنْعًا

Say, [O Muḥammad], ‘Shall we inform you of the greatest losers as to deeds? [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.’” (QS. Al-Kahf: 103-104)

Why are they at a loss? Because they act only on zeal, without the guidance of authentic knowledge.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also gave a very clear criterion :

فَهُوَ رَدٌّ مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِأَمْرُنَا

Whoever does an act that is not in accordance with our matter, it is rejected.” (HR. Muslim)

Knowledge determines quality. A little deed based on knowledge is far nobler and more valuable in the sight of Allah than many deeds done in ignorance

.2. Lessons and Message

The deep moral message here is: Correct your intention, and master the Sharī‘ah. Religious zeal must be matched by zeal for learning. We cannot worship Allah in a way we invent ourselves. Seeking knowledge of the fiqh of worship—such as the rulings of wuḍū’, prayer, and fasting—is farḍu ‘ain, an individual obligation, so that our relationship with Allah is not legally defective according to the Sharī‘ah.Let us return to the time of the Companions and reflect on an incident that grieved the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and drew his stern rebuke. On a journey, a Companion suffered a severe head wound from being struck by a stone. That night he had a wet dream. In the morning, he asked the Companions around him, “Is there any concession for me to perform tayammum?” The Companions, who at that time did not know the ruling, replied, “We see no concession for you, since you are still able to use water.” So, with an open wound on his head, the man was forced to perform ghusl with water. The result was fatal—his wound became infected and he died. When this news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said with deep sorrow and anger: “They killed him—may Allah destroy them! Why didn’t they ask when they did not know? Indeed, the cure for ignorance is only to ask and learn!”This heartbreaking story is an eternal lesson for us: ignorance in worship can not only ruin our deeds, but can also bring calamity to our lives.Let us liken worship without knowledge to assembling a sophisticated smartphone without reading the user manual.

You have all the expensive components, you have burning enthusiasm to assemble it, so you connect the wires and parts haphazardly using your own logic. What happens? Instead of turning on, the phone shorts out, smokes, and explodes. Zeal alone is not enough; without the “user manual” called knowledge, our assembled deeds can be burned to nothing.Ironically, in this digital age, many people worship just by following viral video trends without verifying the knowledge behind them. There was once a person who wanted to pray tahajjud in the last third of the night. Wanting khushū‘ and the “aesthetic” atmosphere seen on Instagram reels, they turned off all the lights and lit plenty of jasmine-scented candles. In the first rak‘ah, they closed their eyes for a long time. When they opened them… why was the room full of smoke? It turned out their prayer mat had caught fire from a candle! In the end, instead of earning the reward of tahajjud, they were busy shouting for the fire brigade. That’s what happens when you worship based only on “they say” and for content, without knowing the pillars, conditions, and virtues taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Worship needs the calm of knowledge, not visual cosmetics!

3. Conclusion and Closing

The validity of our worship is the greatest stake in the Hereafter. Correct worship must fulfill two main conditions: _ikhlāṣ_—sincerity for Allah—and _ittibā‘_—following the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Knowledge is the bridge that ensures every bow, prostration, and moment of fatigue we endure in this world is truly converted into reward that will weigh heavy on our scales on the Day of Judgment.

Brothers and sisters, before we increase the quantity of our supererogatory acts of worship, let us take time to improve the quality of our obligatory worship through knowledge. Reopen the basic books of fiqh, and ask trusted teachers and scholars.May Allah Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā accept every bit of our worship, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us sound understanding of knowledge until the end of our lives
